    Hi - thanks for stopping
    Overall, this piece is 7" x 3.5" - 1.75 pounds
    It has 1 stamp - <DICKE>
I think I'm pretty safe in saying it is some sort of Heavy Duty Clamp - most likely of the hanging variety - but was wondering if anyone might know what it actually clamped?

"In times of old ----" & all that clap-trap, muzzle loading guns used a "V" mainspring for the hammer spring. To disassemble the action properly for cleaning, this type spring clamp was required. These weren't issued to every man. Of course, this isn't the only use for these spring clamps.

This is also mown as a hand vise.

I would also say hand vise. Having that loop at the end, this might be a carpet vise.

Around here these vices are attached to a chain or belt by the ring and used for any job that requires stretching or dragging anything which can fit in the jaws.

Thank you all for your thoughts - I like the thought of stretching things
