    Picked this up off of 5 mile I was told it's close to 100yrs old and an opium bench it looks more like a table.

      Yes, small low tables like this were often used as Opium tables. The items and burners would be laid out on it. Many people mistakenly think that Opium smokers lay down while partaking Opium because they were stupefied by it while smoking but in fact you lay down as it was the most comfortable position to be in while imbibing. The Opium, unlike tobacco was not set alight and burned, it was heated up over the dome shaped glass chimney covering the heating lantern, and the vapours inhaled. Laying down was the most comfortable way of holding the pipe over the heater for the vaporising. That’s why the boxes of the pipes that held the small ball of Opium never look burnt like an ordinary pipe does.
