Folk art at it's finest in every way! This is really an amazing piece, signed too but of course I can't find the artist, which honestly, it almost doesn't matter other than the fact it would be nice to know. AND the easel is the "Eastlake" style. That screams from 1885 or so.

Now, the two were in two different areas but very close to one another as my heart skipped about 10 beats! Right away as I picked up, I should say "snatched up" the easel, I thought the easel would be kind of flimsy for this heavy piece but I didn't care because I knew what it was. Boy was I wrong. These pieces together are as one and that easel is surprisingly strong.

Here's my main question, how would I describe the stone it's painted on? How do I know for sure it's marble? I did read that marble has the lines just like this does, but I need to be positive.

I was referred to 'slag glass' as the material it's painted on. I hope you can see the back clear enough. It definitely looks like marble to me and it's heavy at 6.5 lbs.
    Oh and the painting size is: 14.5" x 9.5" x .5" thick.

If anyone knows of the artist, that would be great too! I think I love, love this painting!

    Thanks all!

You sound excited, and why not! To be honest I have never seen a painting on marble, but then I haven't seen a real one on glass either.
It is beautiful and would be even on board, so you scored for sure. Love the easel too.

The support of this beautiful painting is definitely a stone, either alabaster (softer) or white onyx (harder), I am unable to find any other in google search :-/

Kyra nails it again!!! Nice going. I have a feeling it was probably done in a class and the person that did this one took an old frame from their home, making it into the easel. I thought white onyx too at first but Alabaster it is! Thank you, thank you. Much appreciated!

From my experience its definitely Onyx. Why they painted on it, is anyones guess. I do know that Onyx is not opague but is transparent. Maybe they hoped if a light was shone from behind, it would light up nicely! No such thing as slag glass here. That person does is wrong. Those kind of brown streaks are definitely onyx. Onyx has a big shine when polished.

Also seenMay be similar to what these guys cut:

Have seen a lot of onyx in my time, I just did not know they could cut it so thin.

I bet it looks incredible. Recently seen some harbour sees on tin. You would swear they were lighted from inside. This really is beautiful love how mounted it on the easel.

Thank you so much. I love this piece too and it looks amazing with light around it. I have it standing in a spot where I hope nothing happens to it. Everyone that sees it here is amazed by it also.

Phil, my original thought was white onyx too. I believe after seeing a link here that it may have been an art class and each student got to choose what they painted on. Very original, and very good find. Can you believe someone was actually throwing it in the trash??? Right on top just waiting for me ;)

Same signature that I see as 'Morenos', not Moreno. But the same, nonetheless! Nice stuff!
