I am 99% sure that this is an ivory bangle/spacer. I will try to take better pictures to show the cross lines.
It is finely carved out of one piece and in perfect condition. I don't think I will wear it and I wouldn't have bought it normally, but I found it in the junk section and had to rescue it. I think for 99 cents it wasn't to hard to take a chance.
Thanks for looking:)
Many thanks, blunderbuss2:)
Even if it were plastic 99c is OK because it is a lovely bangle! If it's ivory you have got a great score!
It is beautiful, delicate carving.
You did well! Rescuing this dainty bangle make the elephant didn't die for nothing :-/
Thanks for your comment, racer4four:)
Kyratango, it breaks my heart when I think where the little bangle comes from:(
Yes, ivory is heartbreaking, one can see why it is so prized, the beauty of the material is incomparable, this piece is gorgeous. But as to how the material was harvested, doesn't bear thinking about. :'(
Agree, katherinescollection. I would never spend big money to support the ivory trade. I bought it because the people in the store missed that it was ivory.
Was going to add something along those lines, freiheit, that perhaps the best we can make of this tragic situation is to keep old ivory in the hands of people who best appreciate its quality, while working to see no more elephant ivory is harvested. But it really doesn't bear thinking about because then you start to ponder on how other animals are slaughtered, and how precious metals and stones are produced, and how the earth has been pillaged for the sake of beauty and fashion, and it becomes a bottomless pit of greed and misery. Man is a strange creature.
You said it best, katherinescollections. It's hard to know where to start and where to stop. It would be best to apply common sense to everything man does but not too often people display any. Creed, politics, selfishness, and laziness very often guide our decisions. I work with children and try to make them understand the they need to learn from past mistakes and, hopefully, make better decisions in the future. I am still optimistic and haven't given up my hope for humanity.
I love your comment, Mary:)
I'm glad it delicate I really not into to chunky jewelry for myself but something like this I can get away with. Would always worry about breaking it though.
