In 1963 Max Kannegeisser won an annual competition, for the best glass design of the year, held in Czechoslovakia. The prize was that the design would go into production. This is the design and it was named 'Nemo'.

The items were made in four part moulds which created raised circular or ovoid shapes on the surface. As you can see the shape of the bowl/vase dictated the shape of the raised areas. Randomly some were painted.....

This design was a runaway success and in its first year over 40,000 decorative and functional pieces were made and exported. An effort was made to repeat this success, with other combinations of relief and colour, but to no avail!

There is no doubt why this won - I love Nemo in it's many shapes and forms.
Some shapes work better than others I think but any of it, lit, is like entering a beautiful cathedral.

I find this very interesting. One of the first bits of glass I ever bought was a globe vase with a design like the vases above, but I never discovered the design. Now I know. Thanks for the information.

What I like about this design can best be seen in image three. Through the circles below the rim you get a reduced image of the lustered circles on the other side.

Thank you.....at the time the glass designers of both Sklo Union and Borske Sklo were experimenting with optical effects. This is one result.....

I'm really pleased you found your answer. The globe vase, sometimes called the goldfish bowl, came in at least two sizes.

It really does look like a goldfish bowl! I will have to post a picture of it on here.

Great post Peggy. 40,000, I wonder how many survive. I've never seen one. They're great, very 'of their time'.

Thank you, Fran. Survival.....who knows. They're much thinner glass than the Sklo Union vases of the same period, but more popular I would think!

Fran, the bowl was found at a French car boot sale, so they were probably sold throughout Europe.

I was rather surprised at the response to this glass, but thank you all very much!
