This plate is 15" across and is a ceramic material. I show the artist's name on the back. It definitely is a German family name. The plate has a hanger on the back, so definitely was created as a wall art piece. The surface of the plate has a crackled finish - maybe just age.
I was fascinated when I found it and the owner had no idea what it represents and was a little afraid to show it to too many people because of the swastika at the bottom. My curiosity is in the history of this piece or other similar pieces.

My interest is in the historical past of this plate. Was it created during the time of WW2 or maybe created later by an artist that was attempting to re-create something from the past. I would appreciate any help in information for identifying the significance of the piece and possibility of it's purpose.

This would be majolica and it reflects what he learnt during his stay in Italy at Vietri sul Mare during the Twenties. On the net you will see that he was a painter and ceramicist .... but also did lithos and posters for the German Reich.

Here we have an example of propagandist ceramics as RUCKLGLASS suggests for the Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps or N.S.F.K..

It seems that in 1939 he opened his "keramische werkstatt günther stüdemann" in Thurnau, Germany.
