The letter writer is named Zukowski (or Lukowski). Both names are Polish, and I believe the person who was very glad is Polonia. The meaning of the name is Poland - it's not typical girls' name, not even in Poland. My version of the story is he paid homage to his country of origin by naming his daughter like that. But of course this is only just deduction - maybe she isn't his daughter, but wife?

      My pleasure, Rucklczglass.

Martika, thank you so much for that very interesting and helpful comment!

Sorry, I was wrong. Polonia is used to describe Polish people abroad - like community, not the country.
