9" x 10" x 18" and real heavy at 15 pounds empty. Not sure this thing was hauled around maybe just for benchtop storage? What would the leather loops have been used for in the top? Brass detailing on the latch, corners and handle. The top is beveled or chamfered on all sides. Someone has corrected the front latch configuration.

"Someone has corrected the front latch configuration." I like the way it was before. This way, when you close the lid the latch is going to hit the top of the front wall and not close.
I agree with you--it aesthetically looks better that way -But the original way allowed someone to remove the 4 screws and go inside the box- would not have been very secure-- I also know a decent size screwdriver could do it either way- Whoever made the fix whittled away some of the lid so that it fits flush and closes correctly.
It looks like a lot of trucks of seen back east they had rope handles for two to carry and were for sailors. Sold mine.

Thanks Caper- this thing may be too small to be a trunk- only 18 inches wide? Only one handle - no way for two people to grab? I think its just a heavy tool box... ???
No problems great little box.
This is a bit ornate for a common tool box.... the leather straps on the interior would have been to hold tools into the lid -- my guess is that this was a speciality trunk for more sophisticated tools for some trade -- more expensive smaller precision instruments. A lovely piece.
Thanks for reply Trunkman- is this something you would refurbish// restain or simply leave in worn condition? I kind of like the rough worn look- I will add a wood strip (as close to original as possible) to get the pull out tray back level. I did vaccum out some very small tacks form the bottom of it- possible a cobblers chest.
I would be hard pressed to make a decision on what to do with this gem. I love the original look -- although it would look equally awesome refinished. All that brass will really pop if shined up. Really a matter of preference.
