This is really pretty cool...may I say that even if it's mine?

A fantastic decanter from Iwatsu with a sommerso blue in clear glass.
It has been hand shaped and given a wrinkled external finish.
The neck and lip are a very traditional Japanese form.

A yellow glass medallion of a bird has been added to give it some extra style. Looking at the crest on the bird I wonder if it is a spoonbill or a crested ibis.

It's heavy at 1.8 kg. Makes me wonder about the strength of the wrist holding and tipping whiskey or sake out of this.

    Height: 24cm (10in)

According to Japanese etiquette, it's okay to praise other people's creations, even if the item belongs to you, but never your own creations.

Sake is drunk either cold or heated. This type of decanter would be used to drink only unheated sake. Traditionally, sake was drunk unheated in a small, square wooden cup, called MASU in Japanese. Heated sake was drunk from a SAKAZUSHI, the tiny, one-sip, triangle-shaped cup. [;>)

I will say my wrist couldn't do it Rose but with practice I'm sure I could build the strength lol. Thanks.

I am really appreciating these bits of cultural information you give me Blade.
I do see little glass cups that are sold as sake cups, often very beautiful and expensive.

It's a beauty, solid combination of colors, clear/blue/gold, great shape, the glass form, and the textured surface, ticks all the boxes. :) Can I ask, Karen, where is that beautiful bird actually situated, is it on the base or inside the front? Either an optical glass illusion or my eyes are tricking me, I can't tell. Also, does he have a crown crest, or is that something to do with the glass?

Thanks OGF - you have a good soul.

Spirit Bear I only drink beer or wine so won't be using it! Thanks.

Katherine the bird medallion is on the front outside of the decanter and would have been added after the decanter was made but still very hot. I assume a bit of molten yellow glass was blobbed on then formed with a press mould - interesting they would have bothered to make one as I have never seen them use any seal like mould before, and definitely not this one.
The bird is crested... it's not a pattern. I thought maybe a crested bird had special meaning for the Japanese but all I found out is their love of their spoonbill and ibis, both having crests of a sort.
I am in the usual position of knowing some stuff but flummoxed by lots!

Thanks for the additional information, Karen, now I see how it all goes together, funny how the eyes play tricks! As for the bird, quail have a curly crest on their heads, not sure if Japanese quail have them, though?
