To me this brooch is beautiful, I love the wonderful gold filigree work and the amazing colour display of the opals, (I think they are black opals) The opals are solid, not doublets, I believe these opals came from Lightening Ridge Australia. I hope kiwipaul can give me more information.
The big middle teardrop opal has a very large dome and as you can see all the opals are in a bezel cabochon setting. I've tried to take photos from different angles to get the colour of the opals showing through.
    Many thanks for looking

      Oh... ooohhh... OOOHHH!!!
      Gorgeous opals, gorgeous wirework!!!
Did you notice the special clasp? It can be worn as a pendant without beeing poked by the pin! It must have had a removable bail at some time.

Wow! What a class piece of jewellery. The filigree is beautiful but those opals!!
Not 1, not 2, but 8!! Exceptional and each opal alone is a quality jewel.

Hi Karen, thanks so much for your comment, I was wondering if you could tell me if you think they are black opals? I'm not a expert in opals :-( but I think they are.

Stonking piece Jean, I saw it on sale and thought it was fab, you've done very, very well. An early piece with all solid black opals from Lightning Ridge. Must be later than 1904 when Lightning Ridge came on stream. I'd say late Edwardian to 1920-ish. Certainly no later than early 1930's when 15ct gold was phased out. What are the dimensions of the central opal?
    14. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 9 years ago
Hi Paul, I'm not good at measuring stones but with the tape measure I would say approx 1 1/2 cm, it does have a extremely high dome.
    15. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 9 years ago
I've measured the stone again 1.3 cm long and at the widest 0.8 and about 0.5 dome.
