Collectors of Loetz glass know Franz Hofstötter best as the designer who was responsible for Loetz receiving the Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition in 1900. But apart from his time spent designing for Loetz (from 1899 to about 1912), he was trained in painting and sculpture at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. This painting, a serendipitous eBay find, was done after his retirement, in 1935, and represents the spa town of Bad Wiessee, Lake Tegernsee, and the majestic mountains beyond. I imagine it was done for his own enjoyment, since he was out of the public eye at that time. A recent photo of this location is shown in the last photo. The painting on canvas is about 30 X 40 cm, and is in its original frame. Signed and dated "Wiessee 35. and F. Hofstötter" in the bottom right corner.
