37 1/2' H. A nearly identical piece can be found in the text, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings," by George C. Neumann.
"A double-sectioned (spring adjusted height) rushlight and candle holder."
I was very, very lucky to win this piece at an affordable price. These are hard to come by, and pricey so I may not see one again.
Very nice, great workmanship. Why is the hook on the back? Did they hang it also?
Thanks for sharing.
hotairfan.....thanks for the comment, I was thinking the same thing. Most likely for hanging it somewhere. You can also raise or lower the height. It also spins around.
thanks for the loves, bobby, hotairfan, fortapache, ho2, blunder, mike and motorhead
BH, did you ever try to use rush as a fuel? I plucked a piece of cattail rush from a local swampy area, dried it, peeled it down to the pithy base, and soaked it in shortening. It made a great looking piece of rush, but it didn't burn too well. Maybe I need a different kind of rush other than cattail. anyway it looks good in my rush holder. Mine rush holder was made by a local blacksmith noted for his work here in eastern PA by the name of Henry Dietrich, but it is not old. Henry made it for me a few years ago.
As you stated, original rush/candle holders are hard to come by. You are very lucky to find one. I love early American lighting. Thanks for posting it.
hotairfan,
I never tried to use rush to produce light. It sounds like you did everything right. Maybe you can try soaking it in a different kind of fat or grease? Or perhaps, as you said, trying a different kind of rush. I may give it a go myself.
I was lucky to get this lamp from a good collection, I paid more than I wanted too, but sometimes that it was you have to do. I am very happy with the piece, every time I pass by it I admire the work and simplicity. Thanks for chiming in.
I wanted you to take a look at something I came upon recently. I am going to list it shortly. I am curious to see what you think. Okay, take care, have a great night.
