Mourning jewellery is another passion of mine.
This brooch was found in an antique shop in Hobart. It was mainly the blue enamel that caught my eye along with the Forget Me Not written on it. There did not appear to be anything inside under the glass and the glass itself was not sitting properly in the setting..... we bought it anyway and my husband said we should be able to take the glass out and put it back in securely.
Once home he started gently to take the glass out saying to me all the while that there seemed to be some strands of hair coming out! and then good heavens....you better come and have a look at this!! And there in the recess was a very long lock of grey hair wound with thick thread and a tiny piece of paper with a note on it that brought us both to tears.
Research from old newspapers proved the authenticity of this and further research found that "BC" who had written the note was in fact the daughter Beatrice Crowe who passed away in 1960.
The brooch is pinchbeck? perhaps? and also I tend to think it would be quite a bit older (than the 1935 death) as well.

I should have added that we of course put everything back into the recess.....we did trim off a small piece of hair with the thread to display through the glass.

What a wonderful attention, and touching memento!

I collect too mourning hair items, and lot of silly people tell me "awful, dead people's hair! Why don't you take them of and replace by a pic....."

Your brooch is far earliest than 1935, the long pin and tube hinge place it around 1860!

Blue enamel is not common :-)

Thank you kyratango......yes, I get that same reaction as well! Nice to know someone who appreciates these wonderful pieces.
Thanks so much for dating the brooch.... and the blue enamel is lovely!

Agree with kyra on the date. It might very well be pinchbeck, too. What lovely piece of jewelry. The blue enamel represents the color of the flower.

Hello Efesgirl, thanks very much for your comment...... and how smart are you to put the colour to the flower...... I have had this brooch for years and didn't pick up on that......well done! and thanks again.

Thank you dlpetersen for your comment and the love, glad you enjoyed seeing this brooch! The history of it is just great isn't it! Wouldn't it be great if more of these sentimental pieces had their history:-)
