I am looking to identify the end use for this hammer. Was it decorative only? Because of the square head and wedge shape of the peen, I am thinking it was jewelry or upholstery. Is it old?

How long is it? Being brass it wouldn't be much use as an actual hammering tool. It may be a lodge piece for ceremonial use.

The peen is not sharp and the tool does not seem to have any wear or damage from use. Also, it's too fancy for a working tool. It is most likely a lodge piece, (e.g. Masonic) and as such it would be deliberately made to look old (in this case, to look 16th - 17th century) so it's difficult to give a real age - although from the color I would guess at least 100 years.

Looks like a flint knapping hammer for flintlock guns. They could be quite ornamentet. If so, would be 4"-5" long.
