I purchased this cigar holder at an estate sale it has sterling silver fittings with English hallmarks and I have looked up the English date mark a and it matches the year 1896.
It has the letters R H with S underneath.I don't know what the componant parts are made of ?I think the original velvet lined case is delightful!
The maker is R Hovenden & Sons Ltd. They had a shop in City Road, Finsbury, London.
White stuff is most likely ``Meerschaum`` and detachable part is difficult to tell. In old Russian cigar holders it was made of amber, possibly a resin of some kind, 1896 is too early for Bakelite or synthetic plastic of any kind. You can try to rub it vigorously with wool fabric to feel faint pine scent if amber or plant resin (it will not damage it).

Hello Ivan49,Thank-you very much for your detailed information on this cigar holder it is greatly appreciated:)
I rubbed it with wool and I can detect the odour of pine.
