A co worker gave this to me because I am an artist and she thought I'd appreciate it, which I do. It apparently came from her great aunt who lived in England. This artist palette brooch is silver in colour but has no markings. It has an open clasp on the back. It is approximately 1 1/2" x 3/4" in size and about 1/8" thick and is hollow inside. The flower pattern is in fine detail and the flowers and leaves appear to be coloured in metalic gold and pink colours. I was hoping to find out possible place of origin, the age of the brooch and possible material confirmation. It is quite dirty, and I would like to clean it but I am afraid I may ruin it. Thank you for your time.
This is really lovely!
Hiya. Your brooch is Victorian/Edwardian. Probably circa 1890 - 1900 or so.
Silver with rose gold & yellow gold overlay. Use a nice soft silver polishing cloth to clean it. Or you can use some silver foam. No dips or other harsh chemicals, you want to keep the patina of age on it.
Also, at some stage the C clasp has been replaced. This is not uncommon on pieces of this age.
Hope that helps.
Thank you TassiDevil, I think this brooch is something special as well.
Thank you Jewels1900. I really appreciate your clarification and advice.
