Found this rock while digging out our flower bed last week. Looks like an eagle or bird head possibly. About 10 inches long and 6 inches high, roughly shaved flat bottom, noticable shaping at the back of the head and top of the beak, one side with a dug out eye, and about 3lbs in weight.
Looks more like a dinosaur fossil to me. Too heavy to be from a bird.
Just kidding. I got nothin'.
I got this email back from local rockhound. I sent the photo only. "You are absolutely right, this specimen does look like the head of some kind of animal.
But in fact, it is probably just an unusually weathered sandstone. The “eye” probably was a piece of shale that was present in the sandstone but because shale is much softer, it was eroded away, leaving behind the harder material.
The mostly smoothed appearance of the specimen indicates it was probably once part of a stream gravel that was rolled and tumbled. This is additional evidence for the shale fragment having been eroded away.
I can guarantee you this is not a fossil of some kind, but an unusually eroded sandstone. Geologist"
Just added some more pics. What do you think? Naturally weathered or carved? Let me know your thoughts.
