I spotted this in a joblot of jewellery on everybody's favourite auction site. It was hidden amongst some more contemporary jewellery and bought it thinking it may be Jet. However, after much research, a few little tests and hours cleaning and squinting into a loupe I'm pretty sure it's Irish Bog Oak. It cleaned up quite nicely and it does seem to have some age to it. I have seen pictures of similar styles from the Victorian Era and I think this may be from late on in that era after the Queen had started to allow bits of colour back into jewellery on the court ladies. I love it anyway and often wander about the house wearing it, calling out for the ghost of Prince Albert. He hasn't turned up yet, but it amuses Husband, who thinks I look more like one of Macbeth's witches every day with all my bone, and horn, and jet jewellery.
Any input would be appreciated, as ever.
Thanks for looking.

Nice necklace, how can you tell bogoak from other types of wooden beads? I have never seen bogoak in real life.
Love the part about the ghost by the way :)
I can tell you also love jewelry!
