This is an unusual tintype with a great backdrop.

The photographer has used the 1906 SF Earthquake as a backdrop for his photographs. The backdrop has numerous buildings that are shells or rubble. The scene compares favorably to actual photographs of the era.

I have seen many examples of the "tour car" tintype, some with the desirable Cliff House backdrop, but this is the first time that I have encountered this backdrop.

I don't know if the "4044 CAL" is meant to represent a license plate or California Street, which was hard hit with the earthquake.

Very interesting! I just had to see what I could find in reference to the 4044 and there is a 4044 California Street there...the financial district is very near there from what I saw and so is Nob Hill... I don't know but I tend to agree with you that it did refer to the address not the license plate.
