I found this item in my great grandfathers tool chest...i have no clue where to even begin to look for what it is...so heres a start. The black part is wooden and has a point pointy end like a pencil but is wood. The other end held by a metal piece feels like a glass type material. Any help would b appreciated on identifying this item..thanks.
This is an agate burnisher. The curved end is agate stone. There is a wide variety of burnisher shapes. Burnishers are used when applying gold and silver leaf to smooth and polish the metal leaf because it doesn't sticks to agate.
Ty uncle ron for the in depth identification. .ty to everyone else responding as well?
Sadly there's no money in writing books about stuff few people are interested in. Publishers aren't interested in printing for a limited audience. (Maybe if I could write a reference book with some hot sex . . . .) I contribute to web sites like this because at least the folks here are curious.
On the other hand, I've spent several thousand dollars over the past 30+ years on reference books. :-)
