This contraption is used when castrating piglets. To keep the piglet from squirming and fleeing(I don't blame him in the least). The farmer puts the piglets (male of course) head first into the sock like holder facing the farmer and upside down. His legs are fastened into the wire separators, and the farmer can then castrate him to make for a fatter and less aggressive porker.
It is somewhat worn off, but, if you look close, you can see the checker board pattern that the Purena feed co. uses in their advertisings

Most people today don't have the slightest idea what bacon is or how it's produced. I caught some grief for my duck's-foot webbing punch and recently there was a chicken decapitator illustrated. These sorts of items should serve to remind us of where our food comes from and that all sorts of things that many people might consider "cruel" have always been a part of life. Remember, "PETA stands for "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals."

      Hi UncleRon,
I understand where you are coming from when you mention your foot webbing punch. I collect many homestead items from early American culture. Some of these items may seem cruel to livestock by some individuals who have no idea about animal husbandry of the early pioneers. Our forefathers never wanted to harm or torture their livestock. They only wanted to control them. Many farm animals are a lot stronger than a human. In the case of our forefathers, if they got injured handling their livestock, they could not go to the local emergency room to be fixed up. Their families depended on them. A serious injury could result in the whole family paying the price. Sometimes, in remote areas of our homestead, this could mean starvation to one member of the family and sometimes to the entire family. So the person handling livestock had to use enough persuadence to let the animal know what the farmer wanted of them. This is sometimes hard to understand by a generation raised with a McDonalds or Burger Kings franchise shooting up every other block.

Or was that with a McDonalds or Burger King getting shot up every other block?

Animal husbandry? I think that's still illegal in most states.
      :-)

I think we had one of these when I was a kid. I thought it was missing the long handle and was used for picking fruit or nuts. I guess I was kind of right.
