This rooster is about 5" high by 5" wide. I love the colors and the rooster-ness of it. I guess it is time to admit, I really like chickens and roosters. there is no mark on the bottom. What puzzles me is what the hole in his back is for? It is kind of small so the only thing I can think of that makes sense is a few pencils or straws. You can't really put more than one cloth napkin in it; it would tip over with heavy silverware; it is too deep for toothpicks; it seems really perverse to put flowers in it. I guess you could put fondue forks in it but that doesn't seem too appropriate.
Any ideas?
Me, personally, a thin switchblade knife! [;>)))
This is a majolica rooster planter.
I love chicken and roosters, too, especially in the kitchen. Could this one have been used for teaspoons? He's a darling fellow! :)
Love roosters as well, its difficult think why it has a hole.
I love it!
Thanks for all your great suggestions.
I thought about a planter too, but it's awfully small. :/
very very special and love the colors!!!
Efesgirl is correct, though this one is not Majolica, it is quite a small rooster planter.

Gillian, they may call it a planter, as I said I considered that possibility, and it could be used that way, but what could be planted in a hole that's maybe 2 1/2" wide? It could be used as a vase for a small posy, I suppose. :)
Thanks for the loves Sean, Katherinescollections, fort apache, aura, brunswick, Virginia and Nevada and for all of the research and ideas. I think I need to start a quill pen collection and store them in his back -- anything else seems perverse or cruel.
Hi Katherine, I did an gooogle image search on majolica rooster planter and got a whole page, a lot of animal planters, some things that had nothing to do with roosters or planters, other animal planters and rooster pitchers. I'm going to have another look.

Thanks again Gillian -- I can never quite believe the prices on One Kings Lane but more power to them! And I think mine is prettier than theirs. :)
Cool chooks, thanks Gillian! I would imagine the larger ones could be used as planters, the smaller as vases. Can't imagine what kind of flowers would work well with those colorful figural pieces, but then I have an old piggie with an attached basket vase I've filled with discarded silk flowers, looks rather cute! :)
