This is a wooden vessel with a lid (second picture is the inside of the lid). It is about 7" high and probably the same wide.
As you can see the wood is fairly thick and blackened by something but I don't know what. I also bought this at auction, where it was described as being Asian but I'm not sure that is right either. The lid has a hole in it that is filled with some broken pieces of wood . I didn't see this in person before i bought it (it was pretty cheap and part of a lot of other items as I recall). I actually don't love it but do wonder what it is what it was for, where it is from, if it is old, etc. Any one recognize it?
