I found this little beauty on the weekend and it looked somehow familiar.
When I came home, I checked my grandma's pendant and realized that the two are identical except in size.
Both are made of beautiful amber and are marked AM.
If I am correct, AM. stands for American Gold, which is actually Double, so it is not gold at all.
My grandmother might have bought her pendant in the 1930's or so. I seldom wear it because I am a bit clumsy and misplace things. Now that I have a similar one, I will wear my "new" one and keep my grandmother in a safe place.
Thanks for looking:)
How lovely, and what a great addition to your grandmother's pendant. I had never heard about AM standing for American Gold, and not sure what you mean by Double, and not being gold at all -- I'm confused, lol! :)
Hi katherinescollection. I believe this is a European thing. I remember my grandmother talking about it. I believe the correct spelling might be double with an accent over the last e. To the best of my knowledge it is an alloy looking like gold.
Many thanks, blunderbuss2 and PhilDMorris:)
Thanks, freiheit, now I learned something! :)
I do the same thing with my knives ~ keep a backup of my favorite ones ~ guess that's why I've got 500-plus knives!!! Nice pieces you've got here. Love the "gold" amber color. [;>)
So nice to found the same!
Kath, doublé stands for rolled gold or gold filled :-)
Thanks, kyratango, for clarifying what Double is. I found this on the German ebay site: Um Gold Double Artikel ( meist Schmuck) herzustellen wird eine Goldschicht unter hohem Druck auf ein Messingblech aufgebracht ...
Now I know for sure - LOL!
So they call it "rolled gold" or "American Double" as well. I wonder how the Germans came to the last term!?
NevadaBlades, I am glad I am not the only one thinking that way. I have a lot of items but I consider all of them replaceable with the exception of my grandma, my mom, my children and my husband's gifts:)
Many thanks for loving my pendant:
