Salvation Mountain was made by Leonard Knight who passed away in 2014. Salvation Mountain is near the southeast corner of the Salton Sea near the town of Niland.
The Salton Sea is an area that makes old Route 66 look like a thriving metropolis. It used to have a thriving tourist industry but the Salton Sea got much too salty (and somewhat toxic) and is surrounded with ghost towns with signs of life here and there.
Just east of Salvation Mountain is Slab City. It is a former military base and all that is left are concrete slabs. People stay there free mostly in winter.
Back to Salvation Mountain Leonard Knight lived in the truck in the last photo. Considering that 100 degree heat is normal there it was not an easy life.
Also note this is considered a very large example of folk art. Many more photos so there may be another post or three.
The Salton Sea is a movie with Val Kilmer as well cool post fort.
