This is a Nantucket lightship basket, made early in the century. Off the island of Nantucket ships would be at anchor with lights burning to help other ships navigate through the shoals. During their downtime the crews began to make these baskets to help pass the time. Some of these basket makers became famous for their work, and their baskets are highly sought after today. These baskets became so popular that others on the island soon followed and began to make baskets. They are still made today.
