Purchased these from a woman that claimed that her husband's in law was in the merchant marines and had acquired these in his travels. The inside of the cases are rough (have the texture of being hammered). They also came with two wooden bases! I was told they were cloisonné. The painting/enamel is bright and intricate. I am interested in the age, value and the reasone why the "N"'s are written backward on the bottom of the vases. Can anyone offer advice or input?
