My third great grandfather was active in the new Republican party.
Being the owner/publisher of a small Ohio newspaper, he corresponded with all sorts of people. He left a large collection of his letters, many from Civil War experiences. Also, quite a collection of orations and short articles on everything from politics to temperance. Oh, and stamps, as he was a postmaster prior to the war, Prairie du Chien WI.
Here is the R.B. Hayes response to a letter Greene sent to him. Included is the cover (I have the stamp separately). Also included is the transcript of this letter.
I shared this letter with the Hayes library in Ohio and they sent me a copy of the original letter from my ancestor to Hayes.
Thank you R.B. Hayes Presidential Library!

Great letter!
It was the other way brunswick-- Hayes succeeded Grant as President. Grant succeeded Johnson.

Very cool
Hey there folks, thanks for the comments.
Speaking of Garfield, I posted my Western Union telegram, on the event of Garfield's assassination and the cover.
my 3rd great grandfather was an active GAR member republican. Republican party was a completely different animal back in the 19th century. I'm realizing just how much more, from the volumes of writings my ancestor left.
