I will admit that this ashtray seems totally out of context for things Noritake.
When I hear their name I always think of delicate, or refined, or just lovely.
This is more 1960s brutalist!
I have suspected for a while that Noritake glass was made by Sasaki and this piece certainly supports my theory.
Thick almost plasticky glass, well moulded with a very graphic and textural theme. All hallmarks of Sasaki and Takeuchi in paticular. (Sklo Union too I guess))
16cm square
"Primitive" comes to mind..... not primitive as in "unrefined" or "crudely formed" but more in terms of appearance. The glass, to my eyes, has a stone-like appearance..... very appropriate to the subject matter. [;>)
Thanks Thomas. Following tax changes the average pack of 20 in Australia will be around $40 by 2020. I guess it doesn't cover the cost of health care but it does mean ashtrays will become very scarce.
Primitive is a good descriptor Blade. It's chunky for sure and very bold.
