I picked this up at Goodwill yesterday. It's in great shape. It has a partial makers paper tag on the underside, looks like the end says "mpany", but I can't make out the beginning. I want to say there is "the" in it. I think it's a carved back. Any guess on the maker? Also wonder if I should repar the seat with leather or cane.

      Not sure on the maker.

These type of chairs are called "press back". They are not carved. A large steel die was PRESSED into the wood to leave a 3D design in the chair. This type of chair was all the rage at the end of the 19th/ beginning of the 20th century. The process was inexpensive and allowed for quick production in large numbers without the high price of hand carved products.

The chair probably had a cane insert when it was first made-- I'd replace it with a cane insert.

Thanks for the info! It's such a cute chair and very sturdy. I think I got my $10 worth!
