So I picked up this pretty vase and saw that it was impressed McCoy on the base which took me aback since the transferware decor on the front is Japanese. Never knew McCoy did transferware, or Japanese decor, for that matter. What does the writing say? Is this maybe a famous painting of some sort? Did McCoy do a lot of this sort of thing? I've tramped the Internetz for some time now trying to find information on this vase, all I know so far is they exist. Any ideas, theories, explanations, recipes for banana anything since I have about two dozen about to go bad in my kitchen at the mo, appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Mystery solved by Chiquita Prestwood, one of the top experts in McCoy Pottery. She informs me that this vase was produced for the JCPenney's Pottery Shoppe line, and that Irises were a favorite of Billy McCoy. I have been informed that the kanji reads KOHAKU, likely the name of the decorator. Thanks to all for the help. :)

Woke up just 15 ~ 20 minutes ago. Found myself alone in the house. When my wife comes home from her jaunt to the casino, I'll show her your vase and ask if she can read the Kanji. Get back to you later........ Looks like it's Cup-a-Noodles again for me today. [;>)))))

      It's a real delight.

Wife came home 20 ~ 25 minutes ago..... $40 richer..... Yay, we get to eat tonight..... lol.

She says the KANJI is written in stylized way, like elaborate cursive writing in English, so it's hard to read. She say maybe it's read YASU HAKU or possibly KO HAKU, or possibly neither!..... Sorry we couldn't be of much help. [;>)

Thanks for the love, Efesgirl, brunswick, NevadaBlades, sklo42, aura, vetraio50, and mikelv85. :)

Bonnie, you are too beautiful for words, thank you for the recipes!! I had already seen that listing, and several others, but can't seem to find any history or background on this vase, which is odd considering how popular McCoy is. I'll find it eventually. :)

Thanks, Thomas, it is pretty! :)

Celiene, Bonnie was helping me with the banana overstock, lol. :)

Thanks, sklo, it is a surprising vase, for sure, glad you found it delightful. :)

NevadaBlades, thank you and your wife so much for your help, I don't know anything about Japanese, but the writing did look odd to me, too. The mystery remains unsolved! :)

Thanks for the love, Trey, OneGoodFind, Windwalker, and nutsabotas6. :)

Ken, thank you for the compliment, I did see a few of these vases online but couldn't find any official reference to them. Like a lot of people here I own a few pieces of vintage McCoy, this piece was so out of the ordinary McCoy I thought I would post it here and on a Japanese page on FB, they too found it puzzling.

Celiene, it was a test to see if you were paying attention, lol. :))

As for the Kanji, I am told:

      It looks like kohaku ???
