The block of horizontal characters is usually a poem or a prayer. The vertical set is likely an artist signature for the decoration. For more information, if there is a mark on the bottom, post a photo. You can replace, say, photo four using the edit feature on the left. If there is not a mark, that could be significant too.

Thank you for the pointers Wexval, much appreciated! There are no markings whatsoever on the bottom nor within to show alas - still, I think it's a lovely and striking looking vase.

Since there is no mark it was likely made for domestic use. If it were made for export it would have the required marks identifying the country of origin. I think this is Chinese, but both Chinese and Japanese employ poem/prayer decoration on porcelain and lacquer ware and the vertical artist signature is found on scrolls and paintings of both countries.

Cactus, a photo of the base may still have helped, wexval is good at this, she gave you expert info. It is a pretty vase. :)

Thanks KC and more than happy to add a picture of the base. To the untrained eye it may be plain but no doubt to the experts it may tell a tale!
