I found this little compact in a charity shop a few years back. It measures 2 1/2 inches across. The back is a deep cobalt blue enamel and the inside and rim are gilt. Inside there are two numbers 47 and 1169. The rim is also stamped 935 which I believe to mean silver with gilt plating, and there are three other stamps but the latter two I can't make them out. There are two small holes in inside the base where I think would have originally held a powder sieve or something. The picture on the top is just beautiful. The enamel has an almost iridescent glow when it catches the light. There is a sheep in the foreground and a blue and yellow bird on the mans hand. I would appreciate any help identifying any makers marks and any background or information on it. Many thanks in advance
Your compact is lovely!
.935 is a silver standard used in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. I don't recognize the silver marks.
The design is called Guilloche:
"an ornamental band or border with a repeating pattern of two or more interwoven wavy lines, as in architecture."
I had thought it may have been continental, thank you so much for the info Efesgirl :-)
