I bought a couple of cups and saucers today from a charity shop. They were an old shape but looked new, so I got them to learn more. It took a while but in the end I discovered that they are Royal Crown Derby from 1979-81, BUT they are unfinished, or seconds. The first pic is the cup and saucer I bought, and the second pic is a picture of what it would have looked like if it was finished. I find it fascinating that so much work goes into these cups and saucers.
So interesting. I really like the unfinished one - very graphic.
So many stages left to get to the finished product too!
WOW! I leaned something! I always thought that it was just one step to decorate the porcelain.
Your cup and saucer are striking, not to mention educational. Perhaps rare too......
I wonder if it belonged to someone who worked at the factory. I don't know how else a second would end up in a thrift shop. You know, I prefer your unfinished set!
There seems to be a few on eBay, so maybe there are quite a few about. The quality is really good, though one has a bit of grit on it. I did actually buy 2 (for £3.49). I live within 30 mins of the potteries, so am more likely to find seconds etc around here. On eBay a finished cup is priced at over £100 so I much prefer the unfinished cups!

I may have wrongly assumed these were printed on, because today i came by a very similar patterned jug, plus something else, and they were clearly hand painted, i could see the brush strokes. I didn't buy them because they were damaged, but the ones i have at home i see no signs of them being hand painted. Unless they are printed and the ones i saw were maybe earlier, they looked older than 1980's because one was a gravy boat with a crack in it which had stained brown. Be pretty difficult to stain Crown Derby porcelain i would imagine, though i could be wrong.
