From the corner store growing up - L&H Grocery - North East corner of 11th & Madison, Des Moines, Iowa. Owned by Tom & Mary Hourigan. The store closed in the 70's and I asked if I could have the sign and he said sure! Mom was thrilled. Why do I still have it? Good question.
If you don't want it anymore I know someone that wants it...LOL
Thanks for mentioning me EJW ! Gil, do you need my address ? LOL !!
So much love, heck. There's a large dent above the C of Coca on that side (some kid in the 60's mad at Tom threw a rock I suppose - darned kids - or it coulda been the challenged guy that loved horses and we told him Tom sold horse meat), a scrape on the lower left of the fishtail - looks like reflection - the other side faced south and is not in very good shape. I've been lugging this thing around with me and it's just been hanging in the barn... so I took its picture. I'l be sure to tell it about all of the love - but then I suppose it will ask why it's with me.
Well Gil, you didn't mention that it was damaged & haunted ! Gonna have to think about this now. LOL !! Nice sign & you know at least 5 people have drooled on their keyboards already. Have a nice evening ! Had fun & great history!
Jeez it's not haunted, just fun. Tom once told me he had a goofy user name and a site with the same - I had no idea what he was talking about. By the way he didn't sell horse meat but did have to readjust his scales when we'd ask him to weigh our pinewood derby cars.
You R going to fit in fine here on CyberAsylum ! LOL !! Gute nacht.
Being curious of the age I asked my mom and sister if the sign was there in 1957 when they moved in, they both said yes. I noticed at the bottom right corner of each side in red letters on the green border is AM91. Can't find much on that.
The Arciform logo was used late fifties - early sixties. AM is sign maker Allen-Morrison. 91 is their production code.
