i think that this is Chinese bakelite. i'd like to know what the characters say on the bottom - besides 'China'. The bottom is much thinner and the sides appear carved and cut out and the black is paint, i think. i think it's a brush pot. i won it in an ebay auction.

The mark reads 'Great Ming, Chenghua'. The Chenghua reign in the Ming dynasty lasted from 1465 to 1487. I wonder if this might be a representation of Quan Yin, the Chinese goddess of marcy. It's unique in my experience.

thanks katherine, wexval, and fionablack and everyone who 'loves' the piece! there were several - like 3 i think - sold at the same time on ebay and some went for quite a lot of money. mine was less expensive. each was unique and different from the others.
