Hello. I was wondering if you could tell me anything about this Foo Fu dog statue. It stands about 26" tall, about 23" long, and weighs about 30 pounds (rough guess). I believe it's made of porcelain. I don't think it's super old since it has felt on the bottom. I'm thinking of cleaning it up with a mild soap and water. Is that safe? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Your foo dog (also shi shi lion) is male, as he has his foot on a ball. The female would have her foot on a cub. From the size and weight, I presume the piece is very thick walled or solid. Either way, from the large flecking, it appears to be painted and baked plaster rather than fired porcelain. You can damp wash it. If you like. It could be touched up with a good set of water colors, something like Reeves or better. These come in tubes, like oils, and colors can be blended in tiny batches to match the lion and the base using little or no additional water. A little practice first, and if you try this, good luck.

      Chalkware, eh?

That doesn't sound very durable...I'm almost afraid to hit it with the soap and water.

Wexval, I'll investigate the paint for touch up.

Yes, chalkware, but very large example.
