Rescued from a small local thrift shop. This one has an oval shaped wooden handle covered in leather (unusual), and the leather is still in excellent condition. The slug is also in fine condition. Many of these slugs eventually crack from repeated use. I couldn't find another like this with such a handle. The straight line design is also less common. I use this as a decorative piece in my den.

    Thanks for looking/loving, CW friends!

I know other meanings of "slug", but what's an iron slug?..... excuse my ignorance. [;>)

The bolt/screw may help us put a better date-range on it.

Leather may be a later addition to prevent hands from getting too warm. The reason I say this is that the corrosion on the pipe is severe, but the leather looks good.

I have come across, coal warmed irons, where you put hot coals in the iron itself, flat irons which you put on a stove.

My Gran would always spit on an iron and while us kids were disgusted we'd always watch!

Some of the French made irons are very pretty and actually quite elegant.

NB - the term "slug" applies to the metal bit that goes inside the iron.

SpiritBear - that could be. Overall, the iron is in pretty good nick.
