Acquired this from a very old historic building located in Mt. Vernon of Maryland. Other than the handwritten inscription there is no other means of identification. I am not very antique savy but would like to think this is a special piece since it takes up value space in my home. Help?

It is American Empire. Probably dates from the 1840s- 70s.

The bird's eye maple and mahogany veneers are typical. The contrasts of the drawers (maple and mahogany) and the case wood is really appealing.

I have a very similar chest and love these empire pieces.

Unfortunately, these are not very popular now. I'd expect it to sell for about $350- $600.

About 20- 25 years ago, your chest (with minor repairs) would have brought about $800- $1200.

CW does not permit us to offer an appraisal of anything posted. I guess there could be some legal ramifications somewhere along the line. I don't think(?) any us are 'professionals'. It's usually recommended that you go to eBay or other antique stores for pricing possibilities.

"While an item’s value will sometimes be a part of the conversation, Show & Tell is mostly a forum for communicating with other users, learning from each other, and just having fun!"

Many folks on this site deal in antiques for a living.
