Although I have not much experience with it, the salesman convinced me that this is an antique blonde tortoise hair shell comb. It's a very beautiful find .This is an exquisite and rare, large and spectacular antique carved blonde tortoiseshell lady's hair comb, ca. 1820/1850. It has been cut and carved from a single large sheet of shell. The upper panel is profusely and finely carved with stylized floral and scrolling foliate pierced detail.
The rare tortoise comb is in pristine, extraordinarily excellent condition; there are no broken or missing teeth and no breaks or losses to the carving. The comb is a wonder to behold in its beauty.
In any case has a beautiful cutaway top and 17.5 x 12 cm.
I don't hardly know anything about this material. Please who could give a suggetion to test if it's genuine tortoise?
Sorry, Marga, no can help with your question, but LOVE this piece! [;>)
NevadaBlades and nutsabotash thanks for interest, compliment and love.
Efesgirl thanks for your love.
So beautiful.
I believe these are combs used for Spanish mantillas, this is very pretty, Marga, thanks for sharing. :)
racer4four thanks for compliment and love.
katherinecollections, thanks for love and useful compliment. I think you're right because this comb is rather high form, especially suited to put in a traditional Spanish-style haircut.
These types of hair accessories are beautiful pieces. I have seen them in shops, yours looks very well made. I have to say here that I just saw a comment you left and I am so sorry to hear about your husband. Stay strong, much love goes out to you!!!
