This amazing plate was a lucky find for me.....maybe I got it because in Japanese society owls are seen as bringers of good fortune!
I am a bit baffled by it. I think it has been made with a combination of blowing, slumping and sand blasting . The base plate appears to have been blown (by the back appearance) and there is significant texture in the image on the plate. I really need someone who knows lots about glassmaking to have a good look at this one.
I do know that it dates to the 1950s. That date is given by the box (see image 4) and the remnants of the sticker (image 3).
The sticker is for Fukuoka Glass as FTG, and they stopped using that name by the 1960s when they starting using the names Marti Glass and Multi Glass.
The owl is probably an eagle owl, but it doesn't really matter - he is an awesome owl!
Diameter: 30cm (12in)
Wow, what a great piece of art glass, Karen!! Love this, love the decor, love the owl, love the colors, the texture, and the MCM vibe, it's perfect for that era. I hope you can find out more about it. :)
Beautiful ! I detect a bit of Greek influence here...he's a hoot :)
Karen what a beauty!
You know this girl loves owl's!
I totally LOVE this plate!
Amazing plate!Looks more pottery than glass. It'd be very interesting to know more about this glass processing.
Karen, don't know if you know this or not, but in Japanese culture snakes are also bringers of good fortune, particularly concerning monetary wealth. They say that those born in the year of the snake never have to worry about money, they will somehow always manage to make ends meet without too much difficulty. Wishful thinking, eh?!!? [;>)
This is so beyond stunning and fabulous , love the design and the colors!!
Amazing design and textures!
This is a great find! And you know, the owl is always the wise one ;)
Isn't he awesome Katherine!? Thanks for loving it so much.
Japanese do Greek - no wonder it's good! lol

Hey Melanie I thought of your owl collection when I first saw this - I'm glad it hits the spot!
Thanks Bonnie.
Ivonne too! I am not sure how it's been made but yes I agree it looks like pottery.
I love the snake belief Blade. I have a lovely Japanese glass snake here but it's been a bit off task - I'm still not wealthy!!
Sean - I can see this at your house with your fab things! Move to Australia!!
Peggy - it grabbed me for the design first, then I found out it was glass. No choice - it needed to be mine. Thanks!
Sue - I want to be wiser and this might help. If not, I will just admire it.
I really love it, fantastic post!
Thanks so much Virginia - glad it appeals.
Adorable Japanese owl! Sweet!
