These eggs, I have been collecting for many years. Most of them I bought while I lived in Kenya, and are made of soapstone. There are a array of different themes, beautifully etched. There is also one egg with the names of rivers of Africa. The two black eggs, I know one is onyx, the other one is heavy with pink, white and grey marks running through, I would be interested to know what this stone is. The white one is I think is a white quartz and the red one is I think jasper. If anybody knows what these stones are I would be grateful if you would let me know.
    Many thanks for looking

It would be a beautiful Easter basket! It's quite hard to identify stones from pictures, but I think you probably nailed it. These eggs have a different hardness - quartz, onyx and jasper (they are basically the same composition) are much harder than soapstone - it is easy to scratch soapstone with a copper coin, however you wouldn't be able to do this to the quartz type eggs. Of course I'm not advocating you to scratch your stones.
I would be interested too what kind of stone is that black egg with pink and grey marks. Maybe you can post a separate pic about it?

Thank you Celiene and kyra, for your comments. All the soapstone eggs I've had for many years. I also have a couple of soapstone chess boards and fantastic hand carved pieces. It always amazes me how much work and effect goes into hand carving soapstone, I know the soapstone is soft but the detail in some of the soapstone pieces are lovely.
