It appears to have been made to be an ashtray but this glass bowl is roughly the size of a rockmelon - clearly the makers provided for heavy smokers.
It has a shape and finish not unlike some Murano bowls from this 50s/60s era but is fully stickered up as Japanese.
Fantasy Glass and Island Craft are both brand names of Narumi Glass, also known as Sanyu Glass.
Take a pick - all from the same place.
It is quite thin walled; blue glass (in a colour I call Sanyu blue) has been cased in an iridised white. The blue shows through a little to give a gentle blue colouring to the outside. It's all very calming.
Nicely ground base.
This turned up in it's original cardboard box, surrounded by pristine original wood shaving packing material.
I think it only came out of it's box after 50 years or so to be photographed.
Beautiful..very delicate and shell like. Can't imagine the horror of snuffing out butts in it. However some tempting sweets of your choice would be very nice. :)

Japanese glass in Japan seems undervalued, except for a handful of artists, most now dead.
Lots of Baccarat and Lalique is sold there for silly money for what is sometimes simple pressed glass. Filigree Murano is pretty popular too.

Well this is so beautiful, the wonderful shape, the color combination, especially that incredible blue -- I especially like looking at it through the inside, it rests the eyes and the mind. So pristine! :)
