I found these tumblers in a thrift store. At a glance they looked like vaseline depression era glassware, but the stamp on the bottom looked modern and there were no seams. They were only $0.50 so I took them home to investigate. Turns out they are martha stewart, made in the 90's, sold at Kmart. She apparently had a jadeite line also. Can you believe this? I found it aggravating at first because I was somewhat duped, but to my own surprise I find myself really enjoying these glasses.

What do you guys think about this? Is this a bad thing or a good thing?

I've put the glass next to what I believe to be authentic vaseline glass reamer for comparison. I need a black light to confirm the reamer...

    Happy Sunday :)

The glass looks green to me. It may be uranium glass if it glows but that does not mean it is Vaseline.

Hi fortapache, thanks for your comment. I thought uranium and vaseline were two names for the same thing.

I will put it this way. All Vaseline glass is uranium glass but not all uranium is Vaseline. The name comes from the petroleum jelly Vaseline.
Apparently people got tired of the yellow color and a bit of this and that was added and turned it green. The green glass tends to be depression glass.

What a bummer. I got tired of this sort of thing too so I got a tiny ultra violet light which I keep on my key chain to check for the uranium in the glass. I bought a really good one, made in the usa, for twenty bucks. I've tried cheaper ones but they don't hold up very well. The one I have now is a Photon Freedom Light. It has really helped me from being, as you say, duped. I've been duped plenty of times. If the item doesn't glow I don't buy. I've even found some of the older clear glass will even glow. It may be unorthodox but it has helped me date some items to some extent.

Thanks for the tip, Goodoody. Nice that you named a brand. I'd read it's hard to find a good key chain light that will really work well. Eventually I will probably end up getting one :)

Jenre I have many repro things here I enjoy. No guilt about damaging them when I use them!

racer4four, I have to admit I'm begrudgingly enjoying the Martha Stewart glasses :)

These days I'm finding the repros are just as expensive as the originals. Wow. Especially the martha stewart jadeite.
