I inherited these in the 1980s, from my grandmother. She inherited them from her mother, who probably bought them in a shop somewhere in Brooklyn.
The designs are a combination of hand painting and transfer printing. These plates were made for export ("Germany").

Do I like them? Not especially. What will I do with them? Probably give them to my son.

    :-))))
    Thanks for looking/loving, CW friends!

My wife and I have some nice Japanese collectible items ~ Chinaware and home décor stuff mostly ~ a few that are now nearly a century old. We sometimes wonder what will become of them after we're gone because our son has no interest in such things. Yet, we can't bring ourselves to sell them because they've been our families for such a long time. I sense the same or similar plight for these plates from your great grandmother, even though you say you don't particularly like them. Not especially "beautiful" perhaps (although "beauty" is in the eyes of the beholder), they have age and refinement. [;>)

Ken - I barely remember great-grandma. What I do remember is all her furniture covered in plastic "slipcovers". When my mother was a little girl, she used to "stick" the the furniture in the summertime...that was in the 1930s. Great-grandma was still using that plastic in the 1950s, when I was little.

Even the table lamp shade had a plastic cover - THAT I have in a photo!

NB - I have very little from my grandparents and great-grandparents aside from photos. I do have grandma's wedding band from 1929 and grandpa's gold, onyx and diamond ring. I remember that when I was a little girl, so the ring is probably older than I am (63). :-)))

Things can be burdens but at least it's just a few plates :)
I have stuff here that has been sent out and I've brought back coz I am not sure what to do about keeping them.
