I recently purchase this painting at a flee market. I knew right off it must be really old. Unfourtanitly the artists signature has faded. I was able to make out Ghas M Groches or something similar when looked at with black light. The painting shows a wooded field, Forrest with a pond. I can make out some figures, a few kinda look like monks in brown robes.

This wonderful painting measures 20" X 30" unframed & 28" x 37" framed. The frame is not original.

This painting shows age with heavy crazing & cracking of the paint.

A Tonalist judging by the first picture? Probably dating from the turn of the Century or just prior. The stretcher doesn't have biscuits; they help keep the painting taut. Professional artists usually used stretchers with biscuits, particularly from this period. Likely an amateur or little known artist - but this is not a rule! A clean might help clarify the signature but also expensive if its generic. Nice painting either or. All the Best!
