This is an old print or photogravure of Arab on Horseback by or after Adolf Schreyer, a german artist who died in 1898. It is framed in a very old frame with the inaccurate label "arab outpost" on it (that is the title of another of Schreyer's works). The glass was so dirty that I could barely see the print but I could tell that the frame was really old so figured I'd take it home for $4 and take it apart and see what it was. What I found was a lot of newspaper from 1903 behind the print, some in english and some in french. Suddenly it got a lot cooler.
The picture is about 8 ½ x 11 (so maybe it is from a book)
I'm not sure whether this is a photogravure or litho or print -- if anyone knows, I'd love to hear from them. Thanks as always.
Love it !!!
~ It makes me think of Lawerence of Arbia
100% photogravure!!! I own one just like it!!! :)
Thank you Saulso for identifying this as a photogravure. And also to Aura, Antiquerose, Fortapache, caperkid, Blunderbuss, Windwalker, Nevada, and Thomas for the love. And yes, Antiquerose, I agree, it reminds me of Lawrence of Arabia too. If you haven't watched it lately, and have a LOT of time to spare, I highly recommend watching the Peter O'Toole movie.
Apparently, it's from an 1870 painting.
