In our Naval Museum we have a number of steel helmets but we are not certain about this one with the "leatherette" or oilcloth covering on the edge - has anyone got any snippets of information they can give us please so we can describe it correctly.
It's a British Mk1 anti-gas curtain, when unraveled it covers over the neck & shoulders.
Luckily gas was never used, so most commonly used to keep the rain off, or if an fireman the spray from the hose.
Thanks very much for the ultra quick reply, the curtain is obviously packed so tight under the helmet we never realised what it was. This site has also helped us identify another of our exhibits, a British WWII Navy issue Cruise Visor steel helmet.
Be nice to see that cruise visor.
I will get a photo of it next time I am there.
