I believe that at all homes of Portugal there is a rooster of Barcelos decorating the kitchen or other room and this happens for several generations. My rooster belonged to my grandmother and it is around seventy years old. Currently, there are new versions of Rooster of Barcelos and comprehensibly, the young people prefers them. There is a legend associated to this rooster and tells us the story of a dead rooster's miraculous intervention in proving the innocence of a man who had been falsely accused and sentenced to death.

Marypottery, I had some of these roosters...at least they were very similar and I sold them in my booth a few years ago. I did not know their story. Thanks for sharing!

      Hello mareredware
      Thanks for your comment.
The Barcelos Rooster is a handicraft piece and there aren't two equals, so yours, maybe were portuguese. Who knows? :) More information about this thems. It's interesting.
