This is a huge, heavy seal! It's over 8" tall and 3" square.

I would love to find out what the seal says, and what kind of stone it's made of. Any ideas?

Chinese, male shi shi lion. Best guess from the photos is soapstone. If you pour a thin layer of melted candle wax (red works well) on aluminum foil laid on a cookie sheet and stamp an impression, you will have the characters as they would be read, and thus a better chance for identification. The vertical orientation seems to be correct.
